The property ‘jewel’ on the estate, is an imposing, detached Georgian residence. Spacious accommodation is the major benefit of this stunning yet understated, with flexible roomy and cosy reception rooms, plus five bedrooms and four bath/shower en-suite rooms. Every room and window in the property offers an incredible panoramic view of the surrounding landscaped gardens.
Wildlife abounds on the estate, Pheasant, partridge, deer, hares, rabbits, badgers, and stoats and otters are regularly seen by guests....You never know what you will see next !
As you approach the entrance you are greeted by an avenue of maple trees
At the end of the avenue of trees you are met by an imposing entrance stone and property name plate, gaze over and up a large paddock complete with the estates very own helipad (used by the celebrity guests and VIP’s) and you will see the property, perched on the brow of the hill and framed by the white ‘Dallas’ style equestrian ranch fencing.
On arrival at the house, there is a red granite stoned courtyard, which provides ample parking for 6 or more cars – Stone walls form a border to the courtyard and house well-established shrubs, heathers, Japanese maples, and conifers, as well as colourful border perennials.
The 18th Century house, is built from local Aislaby quarried stone and hand carved in a traditional Herring bone style (Herring was the Port of Whitby’s main harvest in years gone by) ,
The pretty lawned gardens, house trees of cherry, copper beech, hazel, oak and ash, as well as some large Douglas firs and other evergreens. Evergreens form the perimeter to the garden at the rear of the house and offer both additional privacy and a natural wind break. Beautiful borders of perennial plants, such as wild and giant poppies, honeysuckle, wild daisies, lilac, iris, buddleia, holly, hawthorn and rhododendrons provide a kaleidoscope of colours and patterns for all that survey them. There is also an ancient and listed orchard to the rear of the garden, home to a c200 year old Walnut tree. The ‘Godfather’ of the Estate has to be c500 year old Oak tree that overlooks the ornamental pond.
The river bank is a carpet of wild flowers, including miniature daffodils, snowdrops and bluebells, along with rare orchids. Walk along the natures path and you will smell the wild mint, garlic and fennel as the stems crush beneath your feet. Tread quietly early in the morning or late evening, and you may be lucky enough catch a glimpse of the one of the Estates resident’s Otters or deer drinking from the river.
Given good weather the rear garden is a sun trap from sunrise, until mid afternoon. An East facing York stone flagged terrace, provides the ideal sunny spot in which to enjoy breakfast, or your afternoon Botham’s ‘cream tea’. Once the sun has dropped,simply ‘sit and sip’ a glass or two of chilled bubbly or a perhaps that most British of drinks, a Pimms?, whilst gazing over the grounds, and having a ‘natter’ about the days adventures,
To the left and rear (approach side) of the house is a flagged terrace, which leads to a vestibule beyond which is a wonderfully , farmhouse beamed kitchen, hand crafted in solid French ‘Pippy’ oak, Beneath the superb reclaimed York stone-flagged floor lies a creature comforts underfloor heated system to die for, The kitchen boasts fabulous Canadian ‘Blue eye’ granite work surfaces, a large electric range with ceramic hob and fan assisted oven, an original Victorian bread oven/range (decorative), a tall integrated fridge freezer, and, microwave and dishwasher. An additional freezer is located in the adjoining/boiler utility room offering extra storage space for larger parties.intending to cook ‘at home’ more frequently. The oil fed boiler, is man enough to offer a fast hot water recovery rate, and on demand for reasonable usage. There is a separate laundry room with washer, dryer and airers, across the forecourt. The charming and comfortable snug with 2 large sofas and a window seat, has free sat TV/DVD/VHS and is ideal for sitting and relaxing at the end of the day, it also has a sweet miniature Coalbrookdale wood burning stove – whether you choose to curl up with a good book and just chill or watch your favorite movie, this corner of your holiday retreat decorated with British traditional sporting/game memorabilia, will surely be a ‘big hit’ with everyone, not least the kids.
The old reception hall has the original wood parquet flooring, with a central ‘mahogany’ cloaks/WC leading off it.
At the far end of the property is a large drawing room; an elegant room with windows that overlook the forecourt to the front and the gardens to the rear, it also has a door that leads to the grounds. Previous guests have likened to this room to the grand state room on board the Royal Yacht Britannia hence its is now known as the ‘Britannia’ Room. Light and airy and perfect for enjoying drinks before, or coffee after, dinner, there are shelves of books and the atmosphere, enhanced by a décor of greens with accents of pale yellow, is restful.

There is a double bedroom, known as the ‘Red and Gold’ or ‘Teddies’ room after the pictures and numerous teddy bears dotted around, has a window seat, to sit and enjoy a morning cup of tea; this bedroom has a stylish en-suite that includes a wet room-style shower, with drenching shower head and smaller shower hose WC and hand wash basin, There is a heated mirror, mirror light/electric shaver socket. - Electric underfloor heating.
This first floor also has a large Master/family bedroom that overlooks the gardens and comprises a King size bed, numerous fitted wardrobes and drawer units, plus an occasional/additional single 2ft 6 inch bed. There is large elegant bathroom with a free-standing claw and ball bath complete with shower hose, a huge double enclosed shower cubicle complete with large drenching shower head and smaller shower hose, a WC and hand washbasin. There is a heated mirror, mirror light/electric shaver socket. Electrically underfloor heating.
A large twin bedroom, with the original oak beams taken from one of Whitby’s19th century sea-faring vessels, Cruck room the name taken from the Cruck beams has far reaching views down the Esk valley and open countryside towards Whitby, and is decorated in bright colours of yellow and blue, also includes a smart en-suite with shower, WC and hand wash basin.
A staircase leads to the second floor which offers two more bedrooms - a double bedroom dressed in Cappuccino and white and known as the ‘loft room’, plus a further twin bedroom, colours are Lilac and white and dressed with scrubbed antique pine furniture is known as the ‘Gods Room’ as in closest to God. Both of bedrooms have original vaulted oak framed beams and ceilings and share a smart victorian styled ceramic shower room with shower, WC and hand wash basin.
This property is the perfect choice for all occasions, Whether you’re celebrating a special family occasion or for those who enjoy the outdoor life, the woodland, fishing, Low Newbiggin will provide you with a very enchanting and diverse environment – an d a real adventure land for children.
For the experienced angler or those wishing to learn, there is exclusive salmon and sea-trout fishing, which is available by special arrangement on a daily or half daily rod basis (max 2 rods or 4 shared rods per day) – Fly fishing only, unless the river is in spate. All anglers must be in possession of EA Rod License and Salmon and Migratory trout permit (during April 1st to October 31st) to cover period of fishing required. Grayling fishing is available during the migratory trout ‘closed season’. A local Ghillie can be arranged in advance and is subject to availability and an additional fee.
Groom Cottage and Tack Cottage
For larger parties of more than 11 and maximum 21 persons, there are two additional cottages which are detached but immediately located to the main house.
Groom Cottage
Groom Cottage is the Chicken and more recently Dairy shed from the Farms dairy farming past although in the 70’s and 80’s it was used as a grooming stables for horses. It is a single storey property with entrance hall, a double bedroom and a kitchen – that is equipped with an electric cooker, fridge with ice box, dishwasher and microwave - with a small dining area.
The cottage also has a good size sitting room with TV/ VHS; a twin bedroom, a bathroom with bath and shower over and hand wash basin plus a separate WC .
To the outside is a lawned garden, edged by a tall evergreen hedge, with a small terrace with table and chairs, to sit and enjoy the fresh air. This charming and simple garden offers a south/west facing aspect and is very private and sheltered.
Tack Cottage
Tack Cottage is again built from herringbone stone and is arranged over two floors. As the name might suggest, it is the original ‘Tack’ rooms from the estate’s equestrian past. The cottage has a small entrance vestibule from which leads a ground floor double bedroom and a cloak room with WC. There is a cottage kitchen that has an electric oven, fridge with ice box, microwave and dish washer. The bathroom has a large separate bath, and shower cubicle, hand wash basin and a mirror light complete with electric shaver socket.
To the first floor is a large sitting room with dining area and a free sat TV/VHS; a galleried landing leads to a twin bedroom, with views over the open countryside.
To the outside are gardens plus a small terrace with patio dining table and chairs.
There is ample parking for both cottages.
And the ‘icing on the cake’...enjoy the sights and smells from a real steam train, which runs through the grounds at various intervals depending on the time of the year !
